Transcript: Mulroney has always come across as just a little bit too smooth, too slick. I was assigned to Mulroney during his first run for the leadership of the Conservative Party. So I spent a lot of time sitting beside him during that, just before Joe Clark was the compromise candidate. He was spending a lot of money at that time. If you recall that campaign -- it was very glitzy, it was a very up-front, in-your-face kind of campaign -- and people didn't like it. He tried to tone it down in the future, but I think that Mulroney's significant problem was that he always seemed too slick to be believed -- and wasn't believed as a result.
